G.I.Y.

Hello guys! This is an article about Grill-It-Yourself a.k.a. G.I.Y. not D.I.Y. as usual. I haven’t had a good cook-out in ages! My fingers are itching for a bit of sizzle-action! One day, I’ve go to okonomiyaki restaurant in Iizuka with Cino and Shafiq.

Actually, okonomiyaki (お好み焼き, Okonomiyaki?) is a Japanese dish consisting of a pan-fried batter cake and various ingredients. Okonomi means “what you like” or “what you want”, and yaki means “grilled” or “cooked” (cf. yakitori and yakisoba); thus, the name of this dish means “cook what you like”. In Japan, okonomiyaki is mainly associated with Kansai or Hiroshima areas, but is widely available throughout the country. Toppings and batters tend to vary according to region.

This is the style of okonomiyaki found throughout most of Japan. The batter is made of flour, grated yam, water or dashi, eggs and shredded cabbage, and usually contains other ingredients such as green onion, meat, octopus, squid, shrimp, vegetables, kimchi, mochi or cheese. Okonomiyaki is sometimes compared to an omelette or a pancake and may be referred to as “a Japanese pancake”.

Most okonomiyaki restaurants are set up as grill-it-yourself establishments, where the server produces a bowl of raw ingredients that the customer mixes and grills at tables fitted with teppan, or special hotplates. They may also have a diner style counter where the cook will prepare the dish right in front of the customers.

Have a look at this gallery from left to right, top to bottom. Please enjoy G.I.Y. with Mr. Shafiq. :-)

Don’t ill-treat your parents in their old age

2008/10/15-Near Fukuoka Airport

Nowadays, with an increase in quality of life, we do expect that our life expectancy will likewise increase. The chances are that our parents would live long enough to see their grand children and even great grand children. In other words, whilst we change our life styles, our elders are going to be with us longer. Are we going to forget or worse still abandon them when they are no longer able to look after themselves? Is it not our turn to look after them now. After all they had done their most to bring us up?

Life…

merdeka_20081015_0011.JPG

Three passions have governed my life:
The longings for love, the search for knowledge,
And unbearable pity for the suffering of [humankind].

Love brings ecstasy and relieves loneliness.
In the union of love I have seen
In a mystic miniature the prefiguring vision
Of the heavens that saints and poets have imagined.

With equal passion I have sought knowledge.
I have wished to understand the hearts of [people].
I have wished to know why the stars shine.

Love and knowledge led upwards to the heavens,
But always pity brought me back to earth;
Cries of pain reverberated in my heart
Of children in famine, of victims tortured
And of old people left helpless.
I long to alleviate the evil, but I cannot,
And I too suffer.

This has been my life; I found it worth living.
